Our Interview with Camille Leblanc-Bazinet:
The 2014 Fittest Woman on Earth
*Athletes are not directly affiliated with Europa Sports.
Earlier this summer, Europa Sports had the exciting opportunity to interview the Winner of the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games. Camille is one of the most driven, self-motivated athletes we have ever met. She launched her CrossFit career in 2009 after a fellow rugby teammate challenged her to give CrossFit a try. She paid for a yearlong membership that same day and has never looked back since. Today, she is one of the most recognizable, respected, and admired female CrossFit athletes on the planet. Camille says her strongest sense of victory does not come from any of her achievements (though that list is long). She says her greatest accomplishments derive from conquering her weakness. She knows how to push herself—mentally and physically, whether inside or outside the Box.
Training to Win in Life and Sport As a full-time student in chemical engineering at the University of Sherbrooke, Camille studies the processing of enzymes to synthesize a physical transformation. It only makes sense then that she’s a believer in the use of sports supplements to transform her performance. Of course, she’s doing more for the sport of fitness than dominating it—she’s also creating inspiration around it.
There’s strength in beauty. As a role model, Camille is helping to change the way our society defines beauty and strength. Read on to learn about the eating, training, and supplementing regiment that led to Camille becoming the strongest CrossFit athlete (male or female) in Canada, before becoming the 2014 winner of the CrossFit Games.
Q: What do you feel is the impact of strong women in society as role models?
A: I think we are changing the way we all see the woman’s body. Suddenly, a girl who kicks ass is awesome and having muscle is great. I am so excited to see all the teenage girls pursuing their dreams. Women are stronger. Women are more confident with more drive, and to my eyes, so much more beautiful.
Q: What has been your biggest obstacle and greatest victory since joining CrossFit?
A: I think every year there is a new obstacle, either injury or simply trying to balance life and sport. But what I am most proud of is that I am still a full-time student and able to perform my sport.
Q: Why do you take supplements? What do you take?
A: I take supplements to make sure I fuel my body enough—and in the right way. I want to put all the variables I can on my side. I take Xendurance, BSN® Syntha-6 and BSN® Amino-X.
Q: How does your diet differ during training and in competition season?
A: I eat pretty clean all year. During competition, I increase volume but I don’t want to get heavier, so I try to balance quality and quantity.
Q: What is your favorite WOD? Least favorite?
A: My favorite is anything that involves gymnastics skills and heavy weightlifting. My least is definitely rowing—whether for distance or time.
Q: Any advice on strength training?
A: I decided that no one could tell me that I should or shouldn’t be something. So I set aside the fact that I was small and believed that nothing could stop me from lifting as heavy as my body would allow me.
Q: What advice would you give ladies to dispel the myth about “getting too big?”
A: Start training. When you see a change in your body, know that it’s a product of the work you put in. There is no such thing as too big. There is only pride. I don’t see myself as “big.” I see myself as strong and confident.
You don’t win the crown. You earn it. Of course, like every serious competitor, Camille set out to someday win the CrossFit Games. And in 2014, she defeated two-time champion Annie Thorisdottir to win it all. She told us during our interview, “If you don’t go into it believing that (you can win), there is no way you can achieve it.” She was right. Camille’s competitive spirit, discipline, and dedication to constantly improving her performance have propelled her to the top of her sport. Here at Europa Sports, we’re confident that she’ll stay there, because she’s doing everything right. She’s eating, training, and fueling her potential with sports nutrition. She knows that no matter how much hard work she puts in, proper nutrition is what gives her a strong foundation to build on. She’s mentally tough. And physically unstoppable. This is what she’s made of. This is why she’s earned her crown as the Fittest Woman on Earth.
